What Is Dr. Soetomo Museum?

The Dr. Soetomo Museum is a specialized museum included in Indonesia’s official Museum Registration system and part of the Museum Indonesia network. Located in Surabaya, East Java, this museum is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the life, work, and legacy of Dr. Soetomo, a pioneering figure in Indonesia’s early national movement as founder of the Boedi Oetomo organization in 1908.

The museum opened on 29 November 2017 in the historic Gedung Nasional Indonesia (GNI) complex — a site that once hosted key meetings and activities contributing to Indonesia’s struggle for independence.

Museum Category & Type

According to official documentation, the museum is classified as a Special Museum, focusing on the life of a national figure and related historical events.

It serves not just as a repository for objects but as a center for historical education about early nationalist efforts in Indonesia.

Ownership & Management

The Dr. Soetomo Museum is managed by the Surabaya City Government, specifically through agencies responsible for cultural heritage and education. It is housed within the GNI complex, a culturally protected site linked to historical events involving Dr. Soetomo and other nationalist figures.

History of the Museum

Dr. Soetomo (30 July 1888 — 30 May 1938) was a doctor educated at STOVIA and later became a key leader in the nascent Indonesian nationalist movement. Together with his colleagues, he helped establish Boedi Oetomo, considered a precursor to later independence efforts.

The GNI building, dating back to 1930, served as a meeting place for nationalist leaders and later became the site chosen to house the Dr. Soetomo Museum when it was formally inaugurated in 2017.
